Test Drive #2

Test Drive #2

That Wand Is a Wonder!

You pulled down a book from a tall shelf in the Library of Starchime and promptly got hit in the head by a wand that was resting atop it. It looks innocuous, a cylinder of wood, but as soon as you pick it up, light streams out of the end. The barest motion is enough to make fantastic colors, and with a gesture you send light streaming across the library!

Light is all it does, right? Right?

Pranks for the Memories

Diatu Magicademy is a school -- one with different social groups, different Houses, different classes, different levels of experience... in short, pranks are inevitable. The latest one to make the rounds is the Sticky Glyph: step on a certain mathematical rune and the next person you touch sticks to you like glue. Casually brush against them, shake their hand, bump backwards into them -- however you did it, you have a new friend now, like it or not. The glyph wears off in about an hour -- do you wait it out, ask for help, or try to undo it yourself?

The Dueling Club

One of the more popular magical clubs, the Dueling Club is precisely as it sounds: wizards crossing spells, each trying to be the one to 'defeat' their opponent. How to do that varies by the sort of duel -- knocking your opponent off a platform, or getting them wet, or just good old rendering them unable to keep dueling. Less experienced students, like you, get the "water duel" treatment. Use your spells to get your opponent off of their stool in a small pool of water before they do the same to you! Losing means soggy shoes and a laugh at your expense; winning means pride, respect, and a chance for advancement into the club's informal ranks.

Chimera!

Transporting chimera is highly illegal without proper permits -- which is precisely why smugglers do it, and precisely why smugglers are valiantly struggling to extinguish their airship, while the beast responsible ambles down the gangplank and people flee like crazy. A small chimera, its shoulders are about shoulder height to a man. The goat head jabs at the cargo and building it passes, the lion head maintains a watchful forward guard, and the dragon head has taken the "burn it all, burn it all!" approach to greeting its new circumstances.

This is your chance to be a hero, and save the city of Anastara from certain doom at this beast's claws, heads, horns, and fiery breath. Or your chance to run like heck and hope it doesn't notice you.

[That disappointment was shared by another]

Observation number 45, Dueling in this world is nothing like dueling in my own. Spells are used in place of cards.

[Astral, not having fully recovered his memories, still had a strange feeling when he gazed upon one of the contenders. He was content to watch rather than participate. At least until he had a few more spells at his disposal.]

[Mizael casually sweeps his gaze over the crowd, waiting to see who will be brave enough to step up net--and freezes as soon as he comes across the familiar face.

Astral. How long has he been here??

Mizael automatically raises his chin slightly, ready to say something, call him out--but doesn't. Was there even any point in fighting him here if they couldn't do it properly? Would fighting him here, so far outside their own universe, have any effect on their worlds at all? Perhaps he could ensure Astral had no opportunity to return...

But there's Don Thousand to consider too. Don Thousand has ruined everything so much more thoroughly than Astral could have ever hoped to, and so long as they both want to see Don Thousand destroyed...and he can probably count on Nasch to deal with Astral once Don Thousand is gone...

If only Nasch were here to decide instead. Or Durbe. But he doesn't want to think about Durbe right now--

Mizael is just about to open his mouth to challenge Astral after all, just to assess how much of a threat he might be, when some other poor soul finally decides to try his luck and climbs up on the platform opposite. As he's not about to let someone get in some kind of sneak attack, Mizael immediately whirls away to deal with him. No doubt this duel will be as short as the others and then he can deal with more important things.

[Astral was at a strategic disadvantage. Not knowing more about the Barian world or the Barians he was ignorant to the fact that he could have been in any real danger. At least the numbers had remained in the other dimension and thus were beyond anyone's reach for the time being but that also meant that Yuma had been left to defend them on his own. Being drawn here had over complicated an already tenuous situation. He needed to find a way to return to Yuma as soon as possible. The young duelist, though plucky and enthusiastic still needed his guidance]

[Always having been keen on playing more defensively than his human counterpart, Astral saw this dueling club as a great opportunity to learn about what sort of tactics his fellow students tended to employ, and therefore learn from them. strengthening his ability to wield magic here, should in turn help him on his journey to find the way home]

The challenger is a new arrival, his odds of winning are considerably lower than the previous opponent

[Not that the commentary was necessary]

[Said new arrival almost certainly doesn't think it's necessary, as he scowls over in the direction of the comment, but it's certainly not wrong. Mizael's very direct style overwhelms his opponent quickly--it seems like no time at all that not only is the guy's wand flying across the room, but he's falling backward into the water too.

Almost before his opponent has hit the water, Mizael crosses his arms and turns away to stare down at Astral again. Victory had been swift, but it was long enough for him to decide how to proceed from here.

Which is pretty much what he was already going to do, but Astral given him a good opening for it.

Do you think you can do better, Astral?
