That Wand Is a Wonder!

You pulled down a book from a tall shelf in the Library of Starchime and promptly got hit in the head by a wand that was resting atop it. It looks innocuous, a cylinder of wood, but as soon as you pick it up, light streams out of the end. The barest motion is enough to make fantastic colors, and with a gesture you send light streaming across the library!

Light is all it does, right? Right?

Diatu Magicademy is a school -- one with different social groups, different Houses, different classes, different levels of experience... in short, pranks are inevitable. The latest one to make the rounds is the Sticky Glyph: step on a certain mathematical rune and the next person you touch sticks to you like glue. Casually brush against them, shake their hand, bump backwards into them -- however you did it, you have a new friend now, like it or not. The glyph wears off in about an hour -- do you wait it out, ask for help, or try to undo it yourself?

The Dueling Club

One of the more popular magical clubs, the Dueling Club is precisely as it sounds: wizards crossing spells, each trying to be the one to 'defeat' their opponent. How to do that varies by the sort of duel -- knocking your opponent off a platform, or getting them wet, or just good old rendering them unable to keep dueling. Less experienced students, like you, get the "water duel" treatment. Use your spells to get your opponent off of their stool in a small pool of water before they do the same to you! Losing means soggy shoes and a laugh at your expense; winning means pride, respect, and a chance for advancement into the club's informal ranks.

Chimera!

Transporting chimera is highly illegal without proper permits -- which is precisely why smugglers do it, and precisely why smugglers are valiantly struggling to extinguish their airship, while the beast responsible ambles down the gangplank and people flee like crazy. A small chimera, its shoulders are about shoulder height to a man. The goat head jabs at the cargo and building it passes, the lion head maintains a watchful forward guard, and the dragon head has taken the "burn it all, burn it all!" approach to greeting its new circumstances.

This is your chance to be a hero, and save the city of Anastara from certain doom at this beast's claws, heads, horns, and fiery breath. Or your chance to run like heck and hope it doesn't notice you.

Chance to be a hero, or to run? Negative. Chance to taboo that thing into Noise? Now you're thinking in positive integers!

Minamimoto strode out in front of the Lion's head, spreading his six reaper wings wide. He lifted his megaphone.

"Listen up you factoring hectopascal! You want a chance to avoid capture and cause some REAL mayhem? Then it's time for Reaper Sport 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751058209749445923078164062862089986280348253421170679821480865132823066470938446095 5058223172535940812848111! Life is garbage. CRUNCH. You and me? We'll add it to the heap!"

Yeah, someone isn't exactly hiding that he's one of the bad guys. Also, he might be counting on the fact that in the UG physical creatures can't actually harm Reapers. That was why he created the Taboo Noise in the first place. So right now? Fear = 0. Bring it on.

Not having realized he'd stepped on the specific Glyph, or even knowing that something was amiss on the school grounds, Hunk didn't think much of it when he'd bumped shoulder-to-shoulder into a fellow student. That is, until he apologized and tried to step away, only to find himself stuck firmly to his classmate. Well, that couldn't be good.

The Dueling Club
Hunk hadn't agreed to join any Dueling Club, and if he had, he certainly hadn't been aware he was doing that. Still, he's on a stool in the water now, though the water doesn't frighten him. The idea of spells going wrong, now that frightens him.

"W-Wait, I did not sign up for this! Hold on!"

Whether light is all it does or not, Lea has no intention of finding out. He's got a wand already and has enough trouble with that one; he doesn't need the Mystery Wand That Does Weird Things. Giving an annoyed sigh, he sets both book and wand down- the latter very carefully- and slips off his coat to wrap the wand up in before it can do anything else weird.

He'd do the sensible thing and turn the wand in to the librarian. Either someone would come looking for it eventually, or it could spend the next however long gathering dust in the lost and found. Either way, it would soon be someone else's problem.

That Wand is a Wonder

[THUNK! The sound itself isn't much, and Nessa rubs her head and grumbles a curse under her breath before setting her chosen book down and picking up the wand and--]

WHOA! [She almost fumbles it again as the rays of blue and green and white streak across her aisle, and sets it down as well. She's been learning about wands, and has her own, but what the heck is this one doing here?]

Hey, has anyone misplaced their wand? [She might be getting shushed now, being as she's in a library and all, but Nessa doesn't seem to care.]


Chimera

[Oh boy, this is not good. That's the expression written large on Nessa's face. She does her best to duck into an alleyway--but not to run, but to effect a painful, minutes-long shift to Morphus. Minutes too long. Panting, she spreads her wings, extends her claws, and launches herself into the air. Nessa noted that the lion's guard was forward--so from her aerial vantage point, she dives in from behind. She can't do a whole lot to a scaled back--but she might be able to distract it long enough so that someone can mount a more cohesive defense or a capture mission. And while she does that, she yells.]

Run while you still can!!

Nessa didn't think anything of it either--every place she'd ever been had its hustle and bustle of people, and Diatu Magicademy was no different. Didn't bother her a whit--until the large fella who'd brushed up against her started dragging her along with him.

That was a little bit startling, to be honest. But he seemed sheepish about it, and about as surprised as she was.

"Gonna guess you didn't expect this either," she chirped up at him brightly. At least the arm she was stuck to him with was the one not holding her guitar, so she wasn't inclined to be upset about it yet, if at all.

Whoa, that's neat! Sunset's eyes light excitedly when she sees it, and she imagines its owner must be an upperclassman. But he seems determined to get rid of it. Huh.

"...so, hey, is something wrong with your wand?"

Can wands break down? That's another thing to add to the list of Things To Worry About.

The Wand is a Wonder!

LIBRARY! Where else would Twilight be?

In a new world without her smartphone or computer or whatever else? This called for research. And research meant looking through books. Lots and lots of books. The scientific process would help figure out the local magic and figure out what sort of things she could do with the local magic.

And then there was this wand.

"So... is this just a magic rainbow generator?" asked Twilight, waggling the wand a couple of times, shooting out the beams of rainbow light.

"Or is there some kind of trick to it? It's got to be some kind of puzzle. What is it? There's got to be a clue..."

Oh, there she was! Sunset had come to round Twilight up for their weekly music practice, and when she was missing, there was only one place to find her.

The library. Of course.

"Twilight, hey! Fluttershy and I were---whoa!"

She dropped to the ground with a yelp when a beam came a little too close, arms over her head to shield from wayward spells. "Are you okay, Twilight?!"

Kengo was aware that pranks were going around the school again, as he shuffled from place to place once more. What he didn't expect was getting stuck to one of them. And as such, he was sighing, rubbing his forehead a little. "We should probably make our way to the infirmary to get de-stuck," he replied with a little tired sigh. "Have you ever done a three-legged race before?"


The Dueling Club

"I get the gist of it," said Kengo, flipping his wand around as he watched the first years duel. "The objective is to knock the opponent off the platform, or make them surrender, correct? A pressurized stream should do the trick then."

"Huh? Oh, Sunset! I'm sorry, I didn't see you there!" Exclaimed Twilight as she twitched the wand again, sending another beam of rainbows across the room. "Sorry! This is hard to control!"

[burningbrighter]

"Hold on! Um...can you drop it? Onto a cushion or something?"

It would probably wreck the cushion, but at least it wouldn't hurt anyone. She gently tugged Monarious close to her, the floating mass of eyes and tentacles vibrating with worry.

Um... she tries to put it down but there's more rainbows fountaining out of it like it was a freaking strobe light. Gingerly she put it down on the cushion and said, "Okay, try it now, inch over here!"

"Coming!

Sunset does just that, eventually kneeling next to Twilight with Monarious curled around her arm.

"That's not your wand. Where did it come from?"

"I think it was atop the books that I was checking out," said Twilight, rubbing her head. "I was looking for some new books to study when it fell from the top of the bookshelves onto my head."

"When I picked it up, it started shooting rainbows."

[burningbrighter]

"Sooo...it was just left here?" Sunset blinked. "By another student or staff member, I guess, but...why? Unless it's one of those pranks I keep hearing about."

[elementofnerdity]

"It might be? I'm not too sure but just to be safe, we should probably get a teacher in here to check it out." said Twilight.

"Unless we could disable it on our own?"

[burningbrighter]

Sunset lifted her hand, gently coaxing her familiar upward.

"Monarious might. If he can touch it with the right eye, he could stop the spell for a little while. His problem is remembering which eye casts which spell..."

She sighed. "If I'm wrong, we might just send the wand bouncing all over the library."

"That might be a issue, but it's the only chance we have right now," said Twilight thoughtfully. "We don't have any other options."

"I say we give it a try."

Lea looked up as the girl addressed him. "It's not mine," he explained. "I was getting this book down and the wand must have been laying on top of it; darn thing hit me on the head."

"And since it's acting weird, I was gonna bundle it up before it had a chance to potentially do more than put on a light show," he continued. "Figured I'd turn it in to the librarian; if it belongs to somebody, chances are they'll come looking for it sooner or later. And if not, well it wouldn't be the first weird thing to end up sitting in a lost and found forever, and it probably won't be the last."

Hunk shook his head, looking plenty embarrassed. "Man, this place is weird," he sighed, noting that the other girl seemed pretty relaxed about this whole thing. "This has to be a magic thing, right? But we haven't learned anything about this sort of stuff in my classes, yet."

Wand is a Wonder

[From where she's sat with a book to study, Elsa glances up in Nessa's direction, then down at the table. Once she's sure her wand is still beside the textbook, she smiles at Nessa.]

Well, it's not mine, but we should probably try to find the owner.

[moodstringer]

"Yeah, it is," Nessa agreed. Even being from a place where magic was really real didn't mean she didn't think it was weird, or the Tenscore Kingdoms were weird, too.

"Let me borrow your arm a sec," since that's where they were connected. She managed to sling her guitar over the unoccupied shoulder, and tried to push herself off him a little, to no avail. She didn't think it was because she was doing it one-handed, either.

"Yeah, me neither, they're still covering the basics. Hey, could be worse, you could be really grumpy about all this!" Nessa said cheerfully. "Or I could, but that wouldn't be like me. Well, if you're busy we could try to find a teacher, they probably could dispel it. That or we could wait it out. It'd be an interesting way to say we made a new friend. I'm Nessa, by the way. I'd shake hands, but." She just laughed, then.

That had been worth a shot, at least. Hunk forced a smile and shrugged his free shoulder. "Yeah, I guess it could be - you're being really cool about all this."

Which he appreciated, even if he found it a little strange. But Hunk was the kind of guy who tended to catastrophize. On that note, he wasn't entirely sure they should just wait this out - who could say how long it'd last? But... She seemed nice, this Nessa. Hunk's smile grew more genuine.

"Nice to meet you, Nessa. My name's Hunk."

I agree! Except it wants to be a lightshow every time I pick it up. [Nessa is making an attempt to be quieter, now, but the other girl gets a sheepish grin.]

I suppose we could just go give it to the librarian, I'm sure lost stuff gets turned in all the time. But how to get it up there without making the entire place a rave? Bad enough I already caused a ruckus in study hall, you know?

[She gives a skeptical look to her backpack, now.] Maybe if I wore gloves...

Dueling Club
"No," she said plainly.

Elsa had been dragged into the dueling club room as she'd passed by, a younger student babbling about needing even pairs, and she'd found herself led over to the small pool. It hadn't taken much to figure out what was happening, and Elsa wasn't keen on the idea of hurting anyone. Things in her life may have improved drastically in the months between her coronation and Christmas, but that didn't mean she completely trusted any magic not to get out of control. "I'm not doing this. I'm sorry, but you'll have to find someone else."

Chimera!
Elsa pinned up her braid and drew her wand. While she hadn't wanted to hurt a fellow student, she might have to fight to save said students from this creature. Honestly, though, she didn't want to harm the Chimera, either - ideally, she could find a way to simply stun it or trap it.

However, Elsa was not foolish, and she knew she couldn't take this beast on alone. She looked to a nearby Sundered. "I have a plan, if you're willing to help."
