Test Drive #8

Test Drive #8

Wizard's Duel

Have you ever just stopped, looked at your life, and wondered exactly how your choices brought you here? Now might be a good time, as you face a fellow student across a dozen paces of bare intervening space, prepared to clash in magics to prove a point. (That point is probably, "be lucky enough to be superior in magic if you're UNlucky enough that a crowd suddenly bumps you into the dueling ring and that gets taken as voluntary participation.")

Wizard duels have fairly straightforward rules: no killing, permanent or extremely difficult to heal injuries; no Sundering; stay within the boundaries of the circle. Within those parameters -- well, you have enough chance for talking or taunting before the judge drops their hands and bids you begin!

Water Way to Go

The blistering heat of summer has yet to fade from the air, and after week after week of sweaty discomfort, Anastara has entered what the government informally terms "Idiot Month" -- when, heedless of the shifts in canal currents that come as the water temperatures change, people desperate to cool down hop into said canals and get caught by said unexpected currents.

Magicademy students have a standing offer to earn a good wage by patrolling the canals in boats and magically fishing out the self-inflicted victims. Generally two in a small boat is a good number, so get ready to work with your partner to earn some money, and maybe save a fool or two!

Do Not Touch

Sitting right in the center of the Promenade, a subtly-roaring portal of inky blackness ringed with fire stands about six feet tall and half as wide. Perhaps annoying, it only exists from one side, meaning people occasionally walk straight through it without so much as noticing. Perhaps ominously, a small sign hangs from it, reading, "DO NOT LOOK INTO THE PORTAL PLEASE AND THANKS" in the familiar writing of Headmaster Birony.

Perhaps worse, the sign is positioned in such a way that reading it makes looking into the portal almost impossible.

Once you do -- something from your world surges out. A monster, a foe, a natural danger, anything that could potentially be an enemy or cause you harm and can actually fit through the portal. And now you have to deal with it, because it wants nothing more than to DO that harm to you!

(Later on, someone points out to Cam Birony that she probably shouldn't have left that portal there. "Ooh. Yeah," is her response. "Oops.")

Labwork

Not every magical disaster is caused by some wayward student you don't know. Many of them are caused by you instead. To wit: you're on the spot in one of the magical labs, being called on to demonstrate a technique more advanced than others you've mastered so far. Failure is expected, and the wards should prevent any injury to others from a miscast spell. But will the sparks of your magic just sputter out and die? Or will you inadvertently mispronounce, misform, misshape, or miscalculate in a way that brings chaos to you and your lab partner?

(You could also manage to succeed in casting the spell, but that isn't very fun.)

It's a promise! You can't go back on it now! Hahahaha!

[ Looking extremely pleased with himself, he lets go of Lan Zhan's hair and swings off the desk, back into his own chair. ]

It's your turn now! Isn't there a spell you want to show me?
