Test Drive Reloaded! #1

Test Drive #1

Welcome to Diatu (I Like Swords)

The Arrival Hall is all aflurry with activity! No one had expected so many Sundered to suddenly pop up, the staff find themselves desperately scrambling to keep up with the influx, and a bunch of new arrivals find themselves hanging out in the Hall lobby, waiting to be seen, sent home if possible, or counseled and prepared for student life if not. Rumors run like wildfire: some people believe they've been kidnapped by aliens, a worryingly persistent suggestion that this is a setup for a murder-tournament keeps circulating, and one or two nutcases insist that a dragon tinkered with the rules of magic and now they have to study at a magic school to survive. Pie stocks are grievously low, and thought Headmaster Birony herself appeared and began violating the rules of space and time to summon pies from the future, a second Headmaster Birony with an eyepatch, several war scars, and a wild hairdo appeared and promptly yelled at the first Headmaster for stealing her pies. A pie fight erupted. Pie stocks are even more grievously low now.

Still, here's your chance to talk to your fellow arrivals. Or aggressively attack the nearest target in an outrage (they set up a target dummy and labeled it VENT AGGRESSION HERE, and are trusting you guys on the honor system). Staff don't have time to talk, but they promise they'll get to you soon!

A Day In The Life

The sun is bright, the air is warm, a cool breeze blows across Anastara, clouds keep drifting directly through the island and engulfing people... it's summer on Ascelion, and the day is ripe for learning. Or as ripe as Diatu Magicademy ever can be -- though no one would trade the character and charm of the lively campus for some stodgy, regimented school more interested in forcing students into the mold than encouraging them to be their best, sometimes conditions in the Magicademy are a little inconvenient.

A toilet in Kedrigan Hall keeps clamping onto the butts of those who attempt to use it. Thus far, half a dozen students have been freed from its clutches by their friends, while reports of singed buttocks have increased twofold. (Yes, only twofold. Think about that for a minute.) Staff are on the lookout for a prankster rather than a commode, so as of yet the treacherous toilet has gone unpunished...

Not far away, a group of cleaning golems has occupied the promenade as part of an ongoing strike. As they possess only rudimentary intelligence, they believe this involves seizing objects from anyone who passes nearby and hurling them at a set of bowling pins. Meliandre Tomekin, Head of Groundskeeping, has set up shop across the Promenade; any student who wanders too close gets a big block of ice shoved into their hands, along with instructions to hold it still while she shows those reprobates what-for...

In the Great Hall proper, school clubs and activities have, as was inevitable, escalated competition for new students to yet another level which only isn't a war crime because it isn't part of a treaty yet: they've conscripted geese. Horrible geese, to be precise, who dispense flyers for various clubs with less subtlety than a nuclear holocaust. Some of them fight for dominance, others have teamed up to pin down innocent students and stuff leaflets down their throat, and one has a wand and is somehow casting Discovery spells?!

A Forgery!

"I tried a mass-Forging technique," the older student says, showing off the briefcase full of identical wands and a sign that says 'FOR $ALE CHEAP'. "Some of them are exactly what I intended, they self-correct runes, but the rest, well.. . I don't know, I can't tell, and I'm not really interested in finding out one by one, so... you buying?"

All sales final. No refunds. Caveat emptor. As for what the wands do, well... there's a reason he answered with an ellipsis when asked. On the other hand, maybe the effect isn't too terrible? Maybe it's even beneficial! Maybe the wand shoots out rainbows and muffins! Or maybe it just animates and strikes you vigorously about the head and shoulders...

Three Dragon War

Someone, we're not naming names, canons, or the color of eyes and the dragon to which they belong that forms said person's obsession, may or may not be indirectly responsible for the latest game craze sweeping Anastara: Three Dragon War, a collectible card game that features players as dragons, deploying spells, creatures, and Sundered against each other to destroy each and avoid the machinations of the Third Dragon. The awesome thing about the game is that the Third Dragon comes in all different forms: classic bundled-with-the-starter-pack Ire, super-rare Anastara Diatu, suspiciously-rare Cam Birony, ultra-common Large Eagull, and more. The concept of an outside force adding randomness to the battle and being manipulated in turn by cards means Three Dragon War is the hottest card game that's come along since the last card game that was the hottest that had come along came along.

Face-to-face, you find yourself in a duel over these cards and the magical images they summon. Can this untested deck come through if you believe in it? Or are statistics and probability actual things that actually happen? Dragon Battle! Jiao Long Fu!

There's One in Every Test Drive

Not every magical disaster is caused by some wayward student you don't know. Many of them are caused by you instead. To wit: you're on the spot in one of the magical labs, being called on to demonstrate a technique more advanced than others you've mastered so far. Failure is expected, and the wards should prevent any injury to others from a miscast spell. But will the sparks of your magic just sputter out and die? Or will you inadvertently mispronounce, misform, misshape, or miscalculate in a way that brings chaos to you and your lab partner?

(You could also manage to succeed in casting the spell, but that isn't very fun.)

"Do I want it? Nae very sure, if I'm honest. Do I think I need it? Aye, there's the rub. But remember, ye did offer!"

Deep inside, Rosh is very sure this is a bad idea--only echoed by Haagenti's mocking laughter in the back of her thoughts--but there was something, perhaps many somethings, to benefit (or eventually benefit) Loki in this. Knowledge. Potential power to use against others who threatened him.

And at least someone on his side here in this damn weird place. Though there were some perks for Rosh, too. Couldn't deny that. She had to give credit where it was due.

Maybe they'd be friends, too? It'd been a while since she'd had one of those. And if anyone could hold his own against a demon, she figured the God of Mischief was one such being...

"Clever baker." Said with a small chuckle. "I won't forget." The smile wasn't at least quite so wide or sharp anymore. "But I will need to look at your tattoos first. Possibly sketch them. Solomonic magic is older even than I am."

He would have much he needed to research.

Full stop! Full brake squealing, impending car crash, smoke billowing from the tires, stop! The key to his room?

THE.
KEY.
TO.
HIS.
ROOM!?

First the forgiveness thing and then this!? If the Heavens had opened up and God herself had spoken Crowley couldn't have been any more surprised. But... its not like he hadn't thought about it, them cohabitating in the same space. He had that big open flat that could be cluttered with a few hundred books without losing too much floor space. It simply had never come up. When could a demon ask an angel to share space without it seeming... well, too fast?

Crowley sniffed, his head bobbing slightly to the right as he glanced casually aside and tried to play this cool.

"Sure. I mean... I wouldn't want you getting locked away from your library materials."

Did that sound casual? He peeked at Aziraphale's face to check but only for a moment so as to not give too much away.

"Makes sense to keep the adults and kids separate anyway. They probably have curfews and homework and such."

He watched Anthony back. The circling was new. Or maybe it was old. It was hard to tell. He also didn't know if he was relieved to see him here, but he was at least happy he wasn't alone. If it really was Anthony--

And a part of him was afraid. A part of him prickled with ice. But he kept it from his face with a trained patience that he'd cultivated in some bloody lifetime or other.

"No. Not that." He watched him. "Don't you remember?"

"Fuck." He let himself be lead away, thoroughly chastised but also too tired to do much of anything but dig the heel of his hand against his eye, smearing blood across his forehead.

"I need a bloody change of clothes. I need... I don't know what I need. I'm tired of being jerked from one place to another. Don't you get tired of it? Don't you just want to go home?"

If it's magic or not, he can't tell. He sees someone in the way of the toilet like an idiot.

"Move! You're going to get hurt!" He inserts himself in between and gets a lid jammed painfully against his knee for his trouble. "Get help!"
gobetween: (Hey I have an idea)

At the mention of his hair he glanced up, then chuckled a little while floofing his hand through it.

"Thanks. It's a little shorter than it used to be, but that's just fine for me." He walked closer over, hand in the pockets of his vest. "Been here long?"

Oh for the love of...

"I'm trying to help you idiot." The 'copy' said. "Let it after me." Meanwhile Loki--the real one--crept carefully, veiled and unseen into position. This idiot clearly needed *extra* assistance.

Aziraphale looked down, mulling over the answer. "I'm an angel, Alec, I've always been at the mercy of someone else's grand plan. I've always been given assignments and sent places--"

He was so very tired of arriving in new places, being thrust into problems and expected to play savior or to help with their plight. But he was a free agent now, and even if he could not control where he was, he could at least control how he wanted to respond to things. And if Crowley was here, and he was (he always was, thank someone), then it could be home.

"Let's get you your uniform, then, and some tea, and find out where your room is so you can have a nice nap and maybe you'll feel better," unlikely, but he could hope, "afterwards. I'm sorry I cannot offer you better."

"Get out, get out, you pesky birds!" Lena tries again to be assertive towards the geese while swatting the tray at them like they are flies.

The geese begin to squawk in a panic as she pools every single feeling of anger at them and throws them at them for making her day just as miserable like most of the people at the hall. White feathers are scattered as the geese try and fail to escape her wrath.

Well that took an unexpected turn. Fortunately the geese seem to be leaving her be as they rush to escape. A few letting out indignant and panicked honks, getting swat and feathers flying.

"There are easier ways to be bigger and scarier, but that was effective just the same."

(Harry nods back to the pharaoh as a yes: it was nice to have his old magic back, but he feels like he was held back long enough in Avalon that he almost feels weak with them than kinetic and elemental magic, and he just got back and remembered that he also regained Hero spell classes while in the Magic Kingdoms.)

Why yes, I actually did. I first came to the Magic Kingdoms first, stayed there for around nearly a year (9 months at best), before I returned, losing my memories in there and thinking that it was just a dream. Then after I was able to repair my wand in my world, I was taken into Avalon and lived in there for 9 months too. So that means, oh Merlin, I was away from home for 18 months.

Loki blinked at him, hints of exasperation showing in his expression. A splotchy bow tie wasn't all that bad, in his eyes. He also could honestly say this one wasn't his fault.

"Why don't you try again? It can't get any worse." Lies--it could always get worse. But if the other was so upset, he should just try to fix it.

Entrapta | She Ra and the Princesses of Power

[personal profile] sciencegirl 2021-07-29 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
A Day In The Life

People, Entrapta does not get. Golems? A little closer to her preferences. Sure, they're not robots. But they have that same edge of artifice as a robot or a clone that lets her see the touches of personality in their inhumanity that others might ignore.

Including their difficulties with work.

"Look, I promise I can help if you just calm down and talk to me! Please. I promise that you do deserve fair treatment for the amount of work you do. Just because you're tireless doesn't mean that you don't deserve additional time for personal development." Entrapta is calling over to the angry robots, and catching various flung objects with tendrils of hair and setting them neatly down beside of her.

A Forgery!

Entrapta isn't necessarily interested in the cheap price of the wands, she's interested in judging their various levels of 'incorrectness'.

There's a purple-haired woman (and it's a lot of purple hair and all of it is very busy juggling notepads and pens and measuring instruments) standing in front of a wall splattered with various colors of magical dribble. She's carefully regarding each misfire with precision and utmost attention recording to detailed information.

Unfortunately, her clothes are as much of a mess as that wall, thanks to whatever brand of failure these disaster wands have been contaminated with. She stops and taps her pen against her lower lip. It's held in her hair, and her real arms are crossed.

"There are far too few constants between these wands other than the fact they're wands. I'm very impressed that the person failed uniquely so consistently. Also sometimes with painful results but those have been noted as well."

Ignore the faint scorch marks on her.

She's had taller men loom curiously over her. It's nothing that necessarily bothers her, especially when she has a specific ability to put her on eye level if need be.

Its when people get touchy that the issues begin. Peering from an advantageous angle? Oh, that's just impending curiosity. "The person would appear to be a middling con-artist, however their ability to screw up in such impressively varying ways has me fascinated. I'm incredibly curious about all of this. Do wands run out of power? I wonder if they'll run out of power."

She wants them to last through her expirement!

Good thing he's just looming then, hands behind his back. "Unfortunately I don't know enough yet about the wands in this world to give a clear answer. Have you been able to determine how the prankster mixed up his spell, adding a randomizing agent? The wrong word or sigil can have great effects in magic."

"Mmm. Not at all. But I was limited in finances. I couldn't purchase more than five without compromising the ability to purchase tools for future research. However one seems to error in visual discord, whether it's illusion or color effects. One reverses motions of any movement spell. One casts the same thing no matter what you're attempting. One simply turns invisible while in use and only seems to cast extremely minor spells. And I think one is speaking in tongues, but I thought maybe I should see if there's someone that can actually understand it."

She holds each one up as she describes their curious flaws, presented neatly in a cord of highly mobile hair.

So from her limited samples she had at least 5 different effects. "Hmmm. The prankster claims he only cast a mass forgery effect. I wonder if he had one wand in mind, or blank templates. Replicating a spell on masse when one's already been cast on an object is only slightly more difficult than casting one from scratch, at least at first. But to layer spell on spell, you need to be certain how the components and weavings will meld together."

Tilting his head. "Would you like more samples?"

Loki smiles, holding up a hand. Fading into sight with a hint of green-tinged magic are 3 more wands held in his hand. Presenting them to her, that smile remained. "Currently there are far too many gaps in our knowledge and variables to account for. I would still be interested in seeing what your research produces, however."

"Um, thank you, sir," Lena sheepishly accepts the Norse god's comment as she tries to ignore the flying feathers surrounding her from her goose tray swatting, "I am currently getting used to magic at the moment."

She knows that she is having a hard time trying to get her magical foothold well, the young lady is hoping that being in Diatu would help her out.

"Are you sure about that?" Kaiba's rather surprised to see someone...just calmly talking to the golems in this situation. No one's ever tried it, oddly enough.

"Personal development might end in horrible pain for all of us. You haven't seen the ways of the golems."
